EPA Issues Notice of Advance Proposed Rulemaking to Consider Revisions to its Criteria for Municipal Solid Waste Landfills
On December 26, 2018, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published an advance notice of proposed rulemaking regarding revisions to its criteria for municipal solid waste landfills to address advances in liquids management. First, EPA is evaluating whether to relax existing restrictions on the addition of liquids to accelerate biodegradation. Second, EPA is considering whether to include a new class of municipal solid waste landfills units, such as bioreactor landfills and wet landfill units. Finally, EPA will be determining whether other design and operating criteria will need to be revised as a result of the other changes being considered. Through this notice, EPA is seeking information and data to inform its potential rulemaking. Comments are due March 26, 2109.
