What: On June 12, 2025, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published a Request for Information seeking public comments on opportunities for the CPSC to reduce burdens and costs of its existing rules, regulations, or practices without impacting safety.
Executive Order 14154, Unleashing American Energy, requires that the heads of all agencies review applicable agency actions to identify actions that impose an undue burden on the identification, development, or use of domestic energy resources or that are otherwise inconsistent with E.O. 14154. It also requires agencies to develop and begin implementing action plans to suspend, revise, or rescind all agency actions identified as unduly burdensome. Further, Executive Order 14192, Unleashing Prosperity through Deregulation, states that it is the policy of the executive branch to be prudent and financially responsible in the expenditure of funds, from both public and private sources, and to alleviate unnecessary regulatory burdens placed on the American people.
Why: The CPSC provides critical public safety and law enforcement services, protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death associated with the use of the thousands of types of consumer products under the agency’s jurisdiction. Deaths, injuries, and property damage from consumer product incidents cost the nation more than $1 trillion annually. The CPSC uses a variety of approaches to achieve its mission. Among the agency’s tools, the CPSC promulgates regulations and issues guidance and interpretations concerning the safety of consumer products. Regulations and other practices that do not reasonably advance safety, but instead promote unscientific ideological agendas, create unnecessary burdens and costs, restrict consumer choice, or reduce competition, entrepreneurship, and innovation, should generally be eliminated or modified.
The CPSC encourages members of the public, including consumers, manufacturers, retailers, potential market entrants, and others, to comment on ways to reduce burdens and costs of its existing rules, regulations, guidance, interpretations, or practices without increasing the risk of death or injury to consumers.
Action: Written comments and information are requested on or before August 11, 2025.
