FWS Reopens Comment Period on Proposed Foothill Yellow-Legged Frog Critical Habitat in California

What: On May 27, 2025, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) reopened the comment period on a proposed rule setting aside critical habitat in California for the foothill yellow-legged frog.

Why: FWS published a proposed rule on January 14, 2025, setting aside 760,071 acres in California as critical habitat for the foothill yellow-legged frog. FWS designated the frog as a threatened species in 2023.

The agency has certified that the proposed critical habitat designation will not have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities.

FWS also released an economic analysis of the proposed critical habitat designation and will schedule a public hearing if one is requested.

Action: Comments on the proposed rule are now due July 28, 2025.
