EPA Requests Comments on Formaldehyde Risk Evaluation
On March 15, 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published a notice in the Federal Register requesting comments on the Draft Risk Evaluation for formaldehyde.
Formaldehyde is found in:
- Resins used in the manufacture of composite wood products (i.e., hardwood plywood, particleboard, and medium-density fiberboard);
- Building materials and insulation;
- Household products such as glues, permanent press fabrics, paints and coatings, lacquers and finishes, and paper products;
- Preservatives used in some medicines, cosmetics, and other consumer products such as dishwashing liquids and fabric softeners; and
- Fertilizers and pesticides.
EPA has also announced two virtual public meetings of the Science Advisory Committee on Chemicals (SACC). The SACC will consider and review the draft risk evaluation at a 4-day virtual peer review public meeting that will be held on May 20-23, 2024. In addition, a virtual preparatory public meeting will be held on May 7, 2024, for the SACC to consider the scope and clarity of the draft charge questions for the peer review. Online registration for both meetings will be available in the beginning of April 2024.
Comments are due on the Draft Risk Evaluation May 14, 2024.
