DOE Seeks Comments on Withdrawal of Energy Conservation Standards for Residential Furnaces and Commercial Water Heaters
On November 1, 2018 the Department of Energy published a request for comment on a petition for rulemaking to withdraw a proposed rule establishing energy conservation standards for residential furnaces and commercial water heaters. On October 18, 2018, the Department received a petition from the American Public Gas Association (APGA), Spire, Inc., the Natural Gas Supply Association (NGSA), the American Gas Association (AGA), and the National Propane Gas Association (NPGA) asking the Agency to issue an interpretive rule stating that the proposed energy conservation standards for residential furnaces and commercial water heaters would result in the unavailability of “performance characteristics” under the Energy and Policy Conservation Act (EPCA) and therefore withdrawing the proposed standards. The Agency seeks information on the comments and information provided in the petition, and data that can assist the Agency on how to proceed. Comments are due by January 30, 2019.
