NPS Seeks Comments on Proposed Rule Concerning Assateague Island National Seashore

What: On January 17, 2025, the National Park Service (NPS) published a proposed rule to amend the special regulations for Assateague Island National Seashore to remove certain permit requirements for motor vehicles that drive on designated beaches and oversand routes.

Specifically, the proposed rule would remove requirements that (1) the gross vehicle weight rating does not exceed 10,000 pounds; (2) the vehicle has at least seven inches of ground clearance; and (3) the vehicle does not exceed 26 feet in length and 8 feet in width. NPS states these requirements were established in 1976 and are no longer necessary. In addition, NPS would make several technical, non-substantive changes to the regulations.

Why: NPS states the proposed rule will not have a significant economic effect on a substantial number of small entities.  NPS is requesting comments on the rule, and small businesses are encouraged to provide detailed information on direct cost implications and whether any regulatory alternatives would minimize the impact on small entities.

Action: Comments must be received by 11:59 PM ET on March 18, 2025.

Read the proposed rule and submit comments.
