This one-year opportunity immerses you in substantive work influencing federal policy for small businesses while benefiting from direct mentorship from a collaborative team of seasoned regulatory attorneys.

About Our Office

The Office of Advocacy (Advocacy) of the U.S. Small Business Administration is the independent voice for small businesses and entities within the executive branch, the watchdog for the Regulatory Flexibility Act, and a resource for small business statistics and research.



Duties and Responsibilities

As a law clerk, you will play a central role in systematic federal regulatory review, policymaking, and interagency collaboration. Working closely with Advocacy’s Office of Interagency Affairs and Office of Economic Research, you will:

  • Conduct legal and administrative law research critical for reviewing agency rulemakings under the Regulatory Flexibility Act and related statutes.
  • Analyze federal regulations in a variety of policy areas to assess their impact on small businesses and identify opportunities for reform.
  • Draft public comment letters, legal memoranda, and regulatory analyses for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead the development and drafting of Advocacy’s annual report to Congress on the Regulatory Flexibility Act.
  • Collaborate with White House officials, federal agencies, and Congress on oversight activities, regulatory initiatives, and legislation.
  • Engage in outreach to small business stakeholders, gathering feedback on proposed regulations and communicating agency actions.

Position Details

  • This is a paid, full-time law clerk position beginning August 2026 and lasting one year.
  • The position offers substantial responsibility, professional development opportunities, and engagement at the highest levels of regulatory and legislative activity.
  • Applicants should have completed a course in administrative law and demonstrated some related practical experience.

You’ll work full-time from our D.C. office at the U.S. Small Business Administration headquarters located at 409 3rd Street SW, Washington, D.C., just steps away from the Federal Center SW Metro stop.
