The FCC’s next open meeting will be held on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at 10:30 AM ET. The Commission has released a tentative agenda for the meeting. The Commission will consider the following three rules during this meeting.
GPS Alternatives – In this Notice of Inquiry, the FCC is seeking feedback on how to develop complements and alternatives to GPS to ensure robust and reliable positioning, navigation, and timing technologies/solutions. The agency is seeking comments from stakeholders on the following issues: Current Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) Technologies; terrestrial and space-based PNT solutions; necessary security steps for PNT technologies; whether existing regulations should be rewritten or removed to promote adoption of alternative PNT tech; and whether public-private partnerships would play a role in developing new technology.
Next Generation 911 (NG911) Resiliency – In this Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, the FCC is seeking to safeguard the transition to NG911. The agency would like to hear from stakeholders on the following topics: expanding “covered 911 service providers” to include those who control or operate critical pathways/components of NG911 networks; updating reliability standards; interoperability standards for Emergency Service IP Networks and Public Safety Answering Points; modifying certification and oversight mechanisms to ease the transition from current 911 to NG911; and, empowering local 911 Authorities to receive certifications from service providers.
911 Location Accuracy – In this Sixth Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, the FCC is attempting to strengthen caller location accuracy requirements for wireless calls to 911. The FCC is looking at how to increase reliability in 911 call locations (Heigh Above Ground Level reporting, testing in different environments, and creating a way to convey the floor/room/office/apartment number) and improving innovation (expanding test bed data to non-nationwide providers and public safety organizations, eliminating rules that have become obsolete, and developing a centralized online complaint portal).
