DOI Seeks Public Comment on the Proposed Draft Outline for the First National Nature Assessment

On September 14, 2024, the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) published a request for comment soliciting feedback on its annotated outline for the first National Nature Assessment (NNA1).

The U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) was created by Congress in 1990 to “assist the Nation and the world to understand, assess, predict, and respond to human-induced and natural processes of global change.” USGCRP is conducting NNA1 to assess the condition of nature as an aspect of global change.

The scope of NNA1 is to assess the status, observed trends, and future projections of America’s lands, waters, wildlife, biodiversity, and ecosystems and the benefits they provide, including connections to the economy, public health, equity, climate mitigation and adaptation, and national security.

USGCRP seeks public comment on the annotated outlines of each chapter of the NNA1, in particular on the scope and framing of the chapter’s proposed topic areas, which include Nature and Equity in the U.S., Bright Spots in Nature in the U.S., Opportunities for Nature in the U.S., and Frameworks and Approaches for Assessing Nature in the U.S. Input received on proposed themes will be used to develop draft chapters.

Background information, additional details, and instructions for submitting comments can be found at https://www.globalchange.gov/?notices. Responses to this request for comment can be entered via that website.

Comments are being collected electronically and in writing and are due by 11:59 PM ET on November 4, 2024.

Read the draft outline and review information on how to submit comments.
