NOAA Proposes to Designate Papahanaumokuakea National Marine Sanctuary
On March 1, 2024, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) published a proposed rule in the Federal Register designating the Papahanaumokuakea National Marine Sanctuary.
Specifically, NOAA proposes to include an area of approximately 582,570 square statute miles (439,910 square nautical miles) of Pacific Ocean waters surrounding the Northwest Hawaiian Islands and the submerged lands thereunder within the boundaries of the proposed sanctuary.
NOAA has certified that the proposed rule would not have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities.
NOAA is hosting nine in-person meetings throughout Hawaii as well as one virtual public hearing in April 2024.
Comments on the Proposed Rule are due May 7, 2024.
