CPSC Requests Comments on Proposal to Establish Safety Standard for Window Covering Cords

On January 7, 2022, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published a proposed rule to establish safety standards for window covering cords. The rule would require that operating cords on custom window coverings meet the same requirements as stock window covering cords. These requirements specify that operating cords on window coverings be cordless, inaccessible, or eight inches or shorter in length in any use position. CPSC estimates that a substantial number of blind and shade manufacturers and retailers are small businesses. The costs to these small businesses would include redesign, testing, and certifying compliance with the new standards. CPSC states that it does not expect these costs to be significant. Small businesses are encouraged to review and comment on the Commission’s proposed rule, and initial Regulatory Flexibility Act analysis.
