In metropolitan areas, small businesses accounted for 47.1 percent of employment. Outside of metropolitan areas, small businesses accounted for 56.6 percent. However, the small business share of employment outside of metropolitan areas has steadily declined since 2012. This Rural Areas Profile outlines the most up to date economic activity data of the rural areas in this country.
