FWS Proposes Changes to National Wildlife Refuge Hunting Regulations

On August 2, 2024, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) proposed a series of changes to hunting regulations on multiple national wildlife refuges. The changes will take effect in the fall of 2024.

Specifically, FWS is proposing to:

  • Open hunting opportunities at six refuges.
  • Expand hunting or sport fishing opportunities at seven refuges.
  • Close hunting on 111 acres of the Crab Orchard refuge in Illinois so the area can be used for visitor services facilities and activities.
  • Require lead-free ammunition for all hunting on the new Big Cove Unit at Canaan Valley refuge in West Virginia.
  • Require lead-free ammunition for elk hunting at the Des Lacs, J. Clark Salyer, Lostwood, and Upper Souris refuges in North Dakota.
  • Make changes to existing station-specific regulations to reduce the regulatory burdens, increase access for hunters and anglers, and comply with a Presidential mandate for plain language standards.

FWS has certified that none of these changes will have a significant impact on a substantial number of small entities.

Comments on the proposed rule are due September 3, 2024.
