CPSC Seeks Comments on Direct Final Rule to Adopt Voluntary Standard for Clothing Storage Units

On May 4, 2023, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission published a direct final rule adopting voluntary safety standards for clothing storage units. This rule is in response to the December 2022 passage of STURDY legislation. This legislation requires that the Commission either adopt existing voluntary safety standards if they are sufficient or if necessary, adopt new safety standards for clothing storage units. The Commission has determined that the existing voluntary standards are sufficient and plans to adopt these standards. The Commission will also withdraw its final rule from November 25, 2022, that would have required mandatory safety standards for the units. The agency plans to finalize this rule with an effective date of September 1, 2023, if it does not receive significant adverse comments. If such comments are received, the Commission will withdraw this direct final rule.

Written comments are due by June 5, 2023.
