I joined the Office of Advocacy as Assistant Chief Counsel in May 2024. Prior to joining Advocacy, I served as a Public Health Attorney for the CDC Foundation and Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.  Additionally, I was the Executive Counsel and Chief of Staff for the mayor of the City of Shreveport.

What regulatory issues do you work on at Advocacy?

My portfolio covers a wide range of issues, including agriculture, energy, and consumer product safety issues. I also cover natural resource issues, which cover a variety of issues such as public lands and minerals, national parks, wildlife refuges, and some environmental conservation efforts. I primarily work with the Departments of Agriculture, Interior, and Energy and the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

What do you enjoy most about working on these issues?

I enjoy working on a wide array of diverse issues. The complexity and challenges these issues sometimes present not only stimulate my intellectual curiosity but also foster continuous learning. Embracing such a dynamic environment enhances my critical thinking skills and plays a vital role in my professional advancement.

What do you enjoy most about working at the Office of Advocacy?

What I find most fulfilling about my role is the chance to forge connections with a diverse array of individuals, particularly small business owners, and various stakeholders.  Each interaction not only expands my professional network but also offers invaluable insights into different industries. Fostering these relationships allows me to gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the unique challenges and innovations that small entities present, making my work both stimulating and rewarding. Having a deeper knowledge of the inner workings of an industry assists me with building stronger arguments when working with agencies.

If you could give one piece of advice to a small business owner concerned about regulations, what would it be?

Stay informed and proactive. Regularly monitor changes in laws and regulations that affect your industry by subscribing to relevant newsletters, joining trade associations, or attending Advocacy events. This knowledge will not only help you remain compliant but will allow you to anticipate changes and adapt your business practices accordingly. Additionally, consider consulting with a legal professional who specializes in small business regulations to ensure that you fully understand your obligations which can help you navigate any complexities with confidence.
