The U.S. Small Business Administration welcomed the 26th Administrator to head the agency this week. Administrator Jovita Carranza was sworn in on January 14, 2020 after being nominated by President Trump in 2019. This is Administrator Carranza’s second tenure at the SBA. She served in the George W. Bush Administration as Deputy Administrator, from 2006-2009. The President nominated Administrator Carranza to lead the SBA while she was serving as the 44th Treasurer of the United States. She was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in a strong bipartisan vote of 88-5.
Before her first SBA appointment, Carranza had a distinguished 30-year career at United Parcel Service (UPS), where she was the highest-ranking Latina in the history of the company. She started as a part-time, night-shift box handler and worked her way up to President of Latin America and Caribbean operations.
In her role as Administrator, she leads a team of professionals dedicated to ensuring entrepreneurs located across America have the support and resources they need to start, grow, and expand their small businesses, and recover in the event of a declared disaster.
Advocacy is excited to welcome back Administrator Carranza. Acting Chief Counsel Major L. Clark, III said, “We are thrilled to welcome Administrator Carranza back to the SBA. She will be an excellent Administrator and I look forward to working alongside her on behalf of small businesses.”
